Applying online

Online lodgement is preferred  for applications for Citizenship by Descent. For residents of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay wishing to apply online for Australian citizenship by descent, please click here for guidance.

When completing the online form, please ensure you select the correct Brasilia Office. If you select the incorrect office, your application will need to be transferred to the correct office and this may delay processing.

Please ensure that you prepare all required supporting documents, as well as Form 1195 Identity Declaration before you commence an online application.

Please ensure that in all cases you submit high quality quality colour scans of the original documents.   

Application charge

See application fees, forms and appeals for the current charges payable and acceptable currencies for payments in Brazil and Argentina.

The charges can be paid at any overseas visa and citizenship office including the Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires or at a visa and citizenship office in Australia. However, the easiest way to pay is by lodging an online application and using a credit card that allows online payment.

Documents required

Our preferred lodgement method is online and all supporting documents should be high quality scanned copies uploaded to your online application via ImmiAccount.  Please click here for further information.

We recommend you submit all required documents in the first instance to ensure timely processing of the application. If all the documents are not provided with the application form, the application may be deemed invalid with no further processing.  For information on the types of documents required for your application, please see Citizenship by Descent - Documents.

Please DO NOT send original documents unless you are requested to do so by your case officer.  Original documents are not required for initial processing of your application. 

Certified copies of documents are not required when applying online.  Please ensure that in all cases high quality scanned copies of the original documents are uploaded. 

If you were requested to provide original official documents, we will return these once we finalise the application, unless you request to have your originals returned to you prior to decision (see below).  See return of original documents for more information about the process to be followed to have documents returned to you.

Any material submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied with an English translation from an official translator.  Please click here for information on translating documents not in English. 

Return of original documents

The delivery and/or return of original documents (including Australian citizenship extracts/certificates) must be arranged by the applicant/sponsor.

To ensure the speedy and secure delivery of your documents following the processing of an application, please follow the instructions below:

An email will be sent to you to arrange collection or delivery by a courier company.

  • In person: Collection at the Australian Embassy in Brasilia (only) is available by scheduling a collection appointment by return email. This option is not available at the Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires.
  • By courier:  You must prepay and arrange collection by courier with the courier company of your choice from your country of residence.  You are requested to send a return email to the visa office with details of courier arrangement. If you lodged your application online, a copy of the prepaid airway bill (receipt issued by the courier company) should be uploaded to your immiAccount.
